Tip - Michael Moore and F 9/11 to win People's Choice Award
Sun Jan 09, 2005 at 03:34:07 PM PDT
The tip is from
GoldDerby.com, an awards tracking sight. Another winner will be Mel "give me some pain" Gibson for, well, you know. PASSION wins for "best drama," but F 9/11 wins for "best movie of 2004" - the big one. The article includes a spin from the Murdoch-owned New York Post on the idea that the Awards were freeped for Mr. Moore:
But are these selections REALLY the American people's choices? CBS ditched Gallup Poll judging for cheap Internet voting that can be manipulated easily by zealous fans. "Tinseltown has been buzzing about organized campaigns on behalf of Moore's Bush-bashing Fahrenheit 9/11, reports The New York Post.
Eliminationist Rhetoric on the Right - We Must Stand Up To It
Thu Jan 06, 2005 at 06:02:02 PM PDT
Today as I watched the debates over the election fraud in Ohio, I heard a number of Republican House members question the Democrat's loyalty and patriotism over the simple act of filing a protest, and they whined that the Dems were trying to hurt Bush's legitimacy. A few (David Dreier was one) said today's protest "helped the terrorists," thus putting the Dems on the same side as the terrorists once again. I realize that the Dems were mostly pre-scripted, but I didn't hear one attempt to rebutt this "Dem = Terrorist" rhetoric.
David Neiwert has an excellent post on his blog, entitled Headed for the big roundup, which describes his encounters in Montana and Idaho on his recent trip.

Iraq: Coalition Troops outnumbered by Insurgents
Tue Jan 04, 2005 at 01:21:49 PM PDT
This is from the
Times (UK) Online:
IRAQ'S rapidly swelling insurgency numbers 200,000 fighters and active supporters and outnumbers the United States-led coalition forces, the head of the country's intelligence service said yesterday.
The number is far higher than the US military has so far admitted and paints a much grimmer picture of the challenge facing the Iraqi authorities and their British and American backers as elections loom in four weeks.

Bush to Meet with Gay-Book Burying Alabaman
Thu Dec 09, 2004 at 07:09:39 AM PDT
On Monday, Bush plans to meet with Gerald Allen, the bigoted Alabaman representative who wants to bury books with gay characters and themes. The source for this story is The Guardian (of course it isn't the US press):
http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/features/story/0,,1369643,00.html
What should we do with US classics like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or The Color Purple? "Dig a hole," Gerald Allen recommends, "and dump them in it." Don't laugh. Gerald Allen's book-burying opinions are not a joke.
Talk About Downsizing - Salvation Army "Cut Outs"
Sat Dec 04, 2004 at 07:12:21 AM PDT
As many of you know, TARGET has banned The Salvation Army from soliciting in front of its stores, in order to be consistent with its policies concerning other groups. Target is now facing a
backlash from Concerned Women of America and other radical fundamentalist groups for its stance.
It seems that the Salvation Army has a large issue - lack of donations and a lack of volunteers. Now, in certain locations they are resorting to the use of motorized cut out bell ringers to replace volunteers.
Networks Censor Church Ad for being "Pro-Gay"
Wed Dec 01, 2004 at 07:54:35 AM PDT
(
From the diaries -- kos)
I found this item posted over at AmericaBlog:
Apparently the United Church of Christ (those wild folks) can't run an ad on CBS or NBC because the ad mentions gay people in a positive light. CBS had the audacity to come right out and blame it on the gays."
Please
check out the press release from the United Church of Christ.
And then check out the actual commercial that is causing such controversy:
This commercial is tamer than BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
It is time for massive action against our media giants - protests. This follows the Matthew Shepard story last week and the Washington Post's inclusion of a gay-bashing ad the previous Friday. We need church groups and civil rights groups to step up.
CALL FOR ACTION: Letter from Shepard Scribe
Tue Nov 23, 2004 at 05:24:47 PM PDT
I received an email minutes ago that contained the following letter from David Giella, one of the authors of the Matthew Shepard movie that was on NBC. Please read and do as he asks. We have to stand up for our own moral values. My apologies for the formating - I'm learning "on the job." Thanks.
"Dear Friends,
Almost four years ago, in preparing to write the
script for "The Matthew Shepard Story" for NBC, I
traveled with friend and co-writer, Jacob Krueger, to Casper, Wyoming to interview Judy and Dennis Shepard, Matthew's mom and dad. If anyone had justifiable claim to bitterness, it would be the Shepards, given the gruesome, widely-reported murder of their child. But we found them generous, gracious and unflinchingly honest in the face of questions that were hard enough
to ask, let alone answer. Those qualities and the
pain any parent feels for others who've lost a child, however, aren't what seared the Shepards into my heart forever. It was their extraordinary act of mercy.
BUSH'S Science - Mental Health Screenings for ALL
Thu Nov 18, 2004 at 01:40:44 PM PDT
The other day in a McDonalds I made a comment to my friend about Tony Blair becoming Neville Chamberlain Jr. A lady overheard me and thought the remark was inspired. She asked me to check out the New Freedom Initiative and also an article in the British Medical Journal concerning the Bush administration's mental health initiatives. She seemed to work in the mental health fiend and said there was a news blackout on this stuff from the APA. She also said that these initiatives were the initial steps toward EUGENICS.
So I decided to check out the reports and articles.
What Happened - Loss of the Popular Vote
Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 05:52:25 AM PDT
Following are the contents of an email that I sent to my sister:
Well, Europe must be looking at the US with it's metaphorical jaw dropped to the floor. I realize that many are talking about Ohio - and there were some dirty tricks there, including misleading butterfly ballets (AGAIN!), voter challenges and dirty mailings. It will be close in the end, but I'm not optimistic. I do hope there is a recount. I'm actually more depressed by Bush's 3,500,000 lead in the popular vote. I thought that the election would be close, but I didn't think that the Republicans would beat the Democrats so badly on the ground. As you know, I have been working hard for some of the progressive grassroots groups, and they have been working extremely hard. The difference is that we couldn't work directly with the Kerry campaign.
